Calusa Creek Layout 2014

The approximately 500’ of track envelop a swimming pool and spa before heading toward a backyard pond. The code 215 flex track accommodates the pools’ two elevations using long trestles and segments of elevated deck. Seventeen switches are used to navigate the sidings, the narrow gauge spur and to reverse direction. Curves on the mainline are at least nine feet in diameter and will accommodate the larger locomotives while the narrow line only works for locos with four or sometimes six wheel trucks.

The diversity of the layout appeals. I can sit in the late afternoon in solitude with my cigar and run trains. At other times with friends and train enthusiasts, I follow trains while walking around the layout. There are three locations with seating which allow observers to retreat from the harsh Florida sun.

Spring 2014 we added a 200' spur which sends trains through a long tunnel into a separate yard with both a pond and seating for outdoor dining. Two wonderful bridges enable trains to negotiate both the pond and the stream beneath the biofall.  A stone mill with operating waterwheel are an added attraction.  Lighted passenger cars are a delight to watch while dining.
